How to Replace a Broken Toilet
Aug 23rd
Posted by Local Plumbers NJ in General Tips
Tired of either a leaky, broken, or dysfunctional bathroom toilet? If you are willing to spend the time, you can replace the toilet yourself. Here are some useful tips to know when embarking on this do-it-yourself project.
- Ensure that you have the right measurements. Prior to buying your new toilet, take all the measurements necessary, including that from the wall to the toilet base, and all of the sides surrounding the toilet. In smaller bathrooms, space is at a premium and you need to make sure that your new toilet will fit.
- You will also need to buy the washer which is the gasket between the toilet bowl and the pipe.
- Prior to the removal of your old toilet, turn off the water supply, flush the toilet, and make sure there is no water left over.
- Now begin to remove the toilet in pieces, starting from the tank top, and then unscrew the center bowl bolts to remove the tank, finally, remove the floor bolts so that you can take out the tank.
Similarly, you will install your new toilet in the same fashion. Once you have purchased all the replacement pieces, place the large rubber gasket in place, place the new tank on the mounting area and screw the bolts in, and screw the tank to the center bowl using the respective mounting bolts. Last, install your toilet’s seat cover and then turn your water supply line back on.

Leak repairs need to be done as quickly as possible in order not only to prevent a loss of water but also to prevent the damage that water can cause to the walls, ceiling, floor and foundation of your home and business. A small plumbing leak repair can cost you thousands of dollars and days of work and aggravation if you did not detect it in time. There are certain techniques for plumbing leak detection and tools to identify the leak problems and repair it without further damage.
If you see a spot or brown mark on your walls, ceiling, or floors the water leak might be from rain, the plumbing system, hot water line, cold water line, or leaking from the heating system if you are using hot water heat system or steam.
As a plumber, the first thing we will do is to try to shut off the main source of water, if it’s the main water valve or the heating system, and release the pressure from the system in order to prevent further damage.
Finding the source of the leak might be very tricky and difficult because water has a tendency to travel and the spot that you see in your bathroom may be caused by a pipe leaking above the living room ceiling. A leaking pipe investigation could take from a few minutes to several hours and the cost may be from $100 to a few thousand dollars depending on the type of work to be done to access the leaky pipe, repair it and then fix the surrounding area, like repairing sheet rack of the walls and ceiling, painting etc..

Leaky Faucet

Leaking faucets can lead to sleepless nights, irritable mornings and everyday annoyance, not to mention that you are wasting water through those frequent little drops of water. Fixing a leaky faucet can range from as simple as replacing the faucet head or calling a professional plumbing service to check out the pipes connecting the faucet to the water source. Here are the top 6 most common reasons why your faucet at home leaks.
- Cracks. A cracked faucet is one of the most common reasons why your faucet is dripping. The water seeps into the cracks that can be caused by a heavy force or natural calamities, which may cause the pipes to crack. Extreme temperatures can also sometimes crack pipes and faucets.
- Corrosion. A corroded pipe or faucet weakens over time and this may lead to a leaking faucet that will eventually call for a replacement of the corroded areas.
- Pipe joints. Damaged pipe joints, whether made from PVC or steel, is also a leading cause of leaking faucets. A protruding metal piece or an eroded joint can lead to this plumbing issue.
- Too much pressure. When water comes in too strong, which can be sometimes caused by a faulty pressure pump, this strong force can damage the faucet, aerator or even the PVC pipes lining your faucet.
- Loose fixture. A loose faucet head or a head that is routinely switched off too tightly, can lose the tension in its washer and come off loose. Just replace the faucet head if this happens.
- Rust. Rusting of metal and steel is one of the reasons why some people choose PVC pipes. A rusted system weakens the links and eventually causes leaks.

Toilet Flush Problem?
Oct 24th
Posted by Local Plumbers NJ in General Tips
“My toilet has the slows”. That’s the description I got when I answered the phone one day. The guy on the other end was at a loss to come up with any other description. His toilet was flushing very, very slowly as if fighting to drain the water after pressing the handle. Sometimes it would finally finish flushing, but most times the bowl water just went around in a circle. Immediately, I knew what it was likely to be. It was calcium& lime deposits in the “jet” of the toilet. If you have ever watched a toilet flush it looks like a pretty simple operation. You press the handle, streams of water enter the bowl from under the rim, and when the water gets to a certain height, it pushes all the water and solids down the drain, right? Wrong. The fact is that there is another opening in the bowl that spews water at the same time it is coming out from under the rim. It is located at the very bottom of the drain. It can sometimes only be seen from the tank side of the toilet. This water inlet sprays directly into the drain and as it passes through the standing (static) water already in the bowl, it causes a vacuum that actually pulls the water down the drain along with what ever is in it.
What was happening to this toilet was that lime & scale reduced the size of the opening of the jet and therefore could not produce the vacuum or suction to pull the bowl contents down. In most cases this is a pretty easy fix. Simply employ an old coat hanger or stiff piece of wire and bend it into a hook. insert it into the jet hole and ream it with both in & out as well as in a circular motions. You will see the bits and pieces of the scale buildup in the bottom of the bowl. When you think you have removed as much as you can, stop and flush the toilet. You should see a marked improvement or at best a total flush.
But wait….. you’re not quite done. Although you have removed allot of the deposits, there is still more inside the toilet that cannot be reached by mechanical means. For this you need to purchase a liquid lime & scale remover available at your local grocery store. Pour some in the bowl just before bed and let it work over night softening the minerals so when you next flush, some will be flushed down the drain. Do this for 5 consecutive days and your you should have trouble free flushing for years to come.
