Years ago, our company was called to video inspect a main sewer line. The customers had heard of the use of sewer line camera being employed as a diagnostic tool for sewer line repairs, the time we were one of only a handful of plumbing companies in New Jersey (NJ) to use this new video inspection technology. We arrived at the house and performed the sewer line  inspection while making a video copy of the main sewer line. The customer asked us to show us the sewer line video to them and explain our findings. As the video played, they commented how bad the condition of the sewer line was. Being professionals with years of experience in the  pipe video inspection , we saw otherwise. Not having ever seen the inside of a sewer before most customers lack any reference point for comparison between a serviceable sewer and one that needs work or sewer line replacement. Most homes that are over 40 years old have main sewers made of rigid clay. This material is similar to the roof tiles seen on spanish style houses and building. This pipes video inspection has proved to hold up very well over the years in all sewer line cleaning and replacement . However, the pipe came in sections of either three feet or five feet in length. That means on a sewer line in a suburban neighborhood that is 80 feet long, there is a minimum of 16 separate joints. These joints were sealed with certain materials such as a yarn that expanded with moisture and cement. As the ground moved with freeze / thaw expansion and contraction, the brittle joint material would break, allowing tree roots to enter the sewer line and grow. Sometimes the roots would grow so strong that they would break open the pipe. Other times they would just grow until they completely blocked the flow. After analyzing the pipe video inspection we determined that although it was choked by roots from several joints and a few joints were misaligned, it was, after some cleaning work and root treatment was performed, in good condition. It was then that the customer informed us that the company who had cleaned the sewer line in the past had told her she needed to dig up and replace their sewer line for over $6500!! Our company, by employing all the technology available in the industry stripped every root from the pipeline, scoured the entire interior, and, treated the surrounding soil with a root inhibitor, all for less than $1000.00. By “rehabilitating” and cleaning this sewer, all thebenefits of replacing the sewer were realized at a fraction of the cost.
